Developer Advocate — Meaning and Role
Developer Advocate is a person with a Technical Background (primarily Programming) — basically, a dev “in retirement”, if you will — who can Understand Code and Test New Features in order to:
- Share them with the Community in any form: Image Posts, Videos, and so on.
- Build a Connection between the Product Developers and the Developers Using This Product:
- Answering Comments,
- Passing Important Information about Bugs, Feedback, and Feature Requests back to the Development Team.
- Increase Product Sales as a Result of the Transparency and Trust Built Through Points 1 and 2.
There are Plenty of Developers, but 10 times fewer Developer Advocates. And you don’t necessarily need to hire them full-time. I can Promote your Products or Services on a project basis.
Developer Advocate Job
Being an Indie Developer of Unity Assets, Product Advocacy has actually been a part of my job for more than 10 years. The Messages in the Screenshots below are Simply the Result of Something I Really Enjoy: Explaining Technical and Related Topics to People in Simple Language — and it doesn’t really matter whether it’s related to the Game Industry or not.
I try to post GameDev and Unity-related content regularly: It’s not just copying and pasting what Unity Technologies posts all over the internet. I only post what I’ve tried, what I’ve felt, and what I’m excited about. This allows me to add my expert comments and respond to every comment from Other Devs.
How to Become a Developer Advocate
Throughout my career, I’ve observed that many people hate Unity and WordPress on Social Media without making any real effort to improve things. This is not my approach. It just wastes positive energy and closes the door to potential partnerships.
I always try to Make Things Better and Improve the Products and Services around me through Bug Reports, Discussions, Constructive Feedback, etc., while focusing on the positive side.
At the same time, Millions of People around the world Use These Engines and Create Great Projects with them. Is the problem really with the software itself, or is it that You Simply Can’t Create a Successful Title with it, and the problem is actually more psychological?
Anyway, this mindset eventually led me to what I’m doing today — Sharing Developer Tips and Tutorials, as well as other stuff along the way.
In 2026, I decided to become more active in using Social Media. Eventually, an indie developer reached out to me and asked if I could help promote his asset. Result → 100,000+ Organic Impressions.
Looking Back at All of My Activity over the years, I can definitely say that I am a Developer Advocate.
